Nestled along the seaside in southeast Cape Town, Hermanus is the ultimate spot for adventurers, artists, and nature enthusiasts. This small town breathes life for all who visit, and provides a feeling of calmness and tranquility when you need it most.
Additionally, this quaint location is the perfect spot for Southern Right whale watching between June and December every year. An incredible sight, to say the least.
Which is why many South African locals and international holiday makers flock to this beautiful destination for a piece of heaven on earth.
And when it comes to Hermanus restaurants and breweries, our favourite spot is Hemel-en-Aarde. Their delightful background story, their craft beer that is not only tasty but also refreshing, and their delicious meals – to name a few – is what makes this place so special. The large location is perfect for families, friends, co-workers and lovers to sit back and enjoy warm hospitality, great views, and delightful gastronomy.
Passionate about putting great designs together, South African-born Marc de Maudave Bestel decided to open up his own trendy restaurant and brewery in the heart of Hermanus. After spending 18 years in Asia, he and his family felt that this seaside town would be the perfect place for him to pursue his dream…and so they did!
After spotting a gorgeous 3700 m2 piece of land found at the entrance of Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Marc knew that this was where his passion would turn into fruition. So, he got to work and brought to life one of the best Hermanus restaurants today.
Why We Love Hemel-en-Aarde
In one sentence: Marc’s dedication and passion to create craft beer.
And he could not have chosen a better location. Hermanus is such a treasure trove, with a historical harbour, a small fishing village, as well as several great Hermanus restaurants situated in cobbled streets. This intimate town is surrounded by wine farms and filled with friendly locals who thrive on tourism, great food and drinks.
Sitting inside this Hermanus restaurant is such a pleasure. It’s got indoor and outdoor seating with more than enough space to cater for big groups, it’s decorated beautifully with modern furniture and decor, and has a spacious garden with lush green grass to enjoy a picnic or for the kids to play.
At present you can find Hermanus Lager and Hermanus Pale Ale at Hemel-en-Aarde.
Hermanus Lager tickles the tastebuds with a light floral aroma, and a hint of lemon to taste with a dry finish. It’s fermented at cooler temperatures, and is paired excellently with any meal or as a cold one at the end of the day.
Hermanus Pale Ale is a more full-bodied bouquet of hops, and brewed at a slightly higher temperature. It’s got a caramel-biscuit aroma with hints of tropical fruits, a dry zesty finish and a touch of bitterness to taste.
While there are several impressive Hermanus restaurants that have that wow factor when it comes to food, we’re super impressed with Hemel-en-Aarde’s diverse and delectable choice of meals.
Opt for a starter (the beer bread is an absolute favourite), and enjoy a main meal catered for vegetarians and meat-lovers. A tasty rissotto, salad or bean stew is what veggie lovers have to look forward to, while their meats are done via open fire grill. There’s even a kid’s menu for the little ones.
Pick and choose from a number of side dishes and desserts to compliment your meal, and your chosen craft beer. And if you’re not much of a beer drinker, they too have a number of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks on the menu.
Needless to say, Hemel-en-Aarde caters for all, and time spent here is nothing but a pleasure. Enjoy the beautiful seaside town complimented with Hermanus restaurants, amazing sights, and good vibes.
